Vote on Tuesday!

October 31, 2003

Big elections coming up in Virginia on Tuesday. All the seats in the VA House and Senate are up, as well as the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board. Please, if you do nothing else today, educate yourself on the candidates and issues. Check out the Washington Post election guide. You can also get a sample ballot from the Fairfax County web site.

I won’t tell you which way to vote, except on one election: Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. It’s Mychele Brickner vs. Gerry Connolly. I’m not excited about either one of them, frankly. But I have to encourage everyone to vote for Gerry Connolly. Brickner has been sidestepping questions about what she would do if elected all campaign long, while also distancing herself from her record as a School Board member. Her record speaks for itself. She was the one Board member that PABBIS could come to whenever they wanted to get a book banned. (Last time I checked, this was the USA, not Nazi Germany) Several times, she voted against the budget for school, while offering little suggestions on how to change it. She now wants to cap property tax increases at 5%, claiming she can find enough waste in the budget to compensate for it. Meanwhile, she offers no details, other than to say she will hire an inspector general who will find the waste for her.

Enough ranting, go out and figure out who you want to vote for yourself!

World Series Game 3

October 24, 2003

I finally got the chance to get the pictures together from Game 3 of the World Series between the Florida Marlins and the New York Yankees. In case you haven’t figured it out, I was there! The whole family except for Max flew down on Tuesday morning. The game was pretty awesome, especially since it turned out to be the only game the Yankees won in Florida!

Kids play the Classics

October 20, 2003

A video game magazine let (forced) a bunch of pre-teens play classic video games from the late 70s and early 80s. The best quote, from them playing Space Invaders:

EGM: Would you rather play this or play outside?

Andrew: Outside.

Go Yankees!

October 17, 2003

The Curses live on! Both the Cubs and Red Sox blow chances to go to the World Series. While it would have been an interesting one to watch, barring any apocalyptic events, as a Yankees fan and Cub hater, I am very pleased (though it would have been fun to knock the Cubs out ourselves).

It was a long night though, as evidenced by the peanut shells in the bag and mess on the floor.

The peanuts are a better good luck charm, when used properly, than any Curse.

KB Toys settlement

October 2, 2003

KB Toys just settled a class action lawsuit. The settlement required that they hold a sale from October 8-14, offering 30% off (presumably, this excludes big ticket items like video game consoles and such, but who knows). Take the opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping for Ellie and me!

Read the settlement here.
