Big elections coming up in Virginia on Tuesday. All the seats in the VA House and Senate are up, as well as the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board. Please, if you do nothing else today, educate yourself on the candidates and issues. Check out the Washington Post election guide. You can also get a sample ballot from the Fairfax County web site.
I won’t tell you which way to vote, except on one election: Chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. It’s Mychele Brickner vs. Gerry Connolly. I’m not excited about either one of them, frankly. But I have to encourage everyone to vote for Gerry Connolly. Brickner has been sidestepping questions about what she would do if elected all campaign long, while also distancing herself from her record as a School Board member. Her record speaks for itself. She was the one Board member that PABBIS could come to whenever they wanted to get a book banned. (Last time I checked, this was the USA, not Nazi Germany) Several times, she voted against the budget for school, while offering little suggestions on how to change it. She now wants to cap property tax increases at 5%, claiming she can find enough waste in the budget to compensate for it. Meanwhile, she offers no details, other than to say she will hire an inspector general who will find the waste for her.
Enough ranting, go out and figure out who you want to vote for yourself!
